Work in Progress: How Wegmans “Took the Fear Away” From Frontline Workers

Best WorkplacesEmployee Well-being

Grocery store chain Wegmans Food Markets has been on the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For® list we produce for more than 20 consecutive years—ranking number 3 in 2020. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wegmans employees have been on the front lines of providing the public with food essentials.

This week on Work in Progress, we hear from Wegmans employee, Jill Metz, who works in the bakery department of a Wegmans in Buffalo, NY. Jill says it has been “scary” working amid the uncertainties of the pandemic, but that Wegmans has reassured her and her co-workers. The company has maintained high standards of safety, she says, and little gestures of generosity have gone a long way.

We also hear from Patty Kaminsky, a Wegmans district manager. Patty points out how important clear communication is, and how Wegmans has recognized its people in ways ranging from free coffee to pay raises to signs that read “Heroes Enter Here” on employee entrances.

Work in Progress hosts Ed Frauenheim, Senior Director of Content, and Julian Lute, Strategic Adviser, talk to one of the country’s Best Workplaces™ about how they are taking care of employees’ well-being and serving customers during this challenging time.
